DJ Blast

It all started on a fall day in 1984, when DJ Blast, then 10-year-old Jean-Evens Bellevue from Montreal North, attempted to redo what he had seen on Beat Street, one of hip hop's first groundbreaking movies. With a "Goldorak" record and a turntable, DJ Blast scratched for the first time-the starting point of what turned out to be a rewarding career as a DJ.

After the 1993 trophy for placing 2nd in the DJ segment of Big Break, a local talent competition, DJ Blast remained devoted to this art form. He placed 1st at Big Break and Nervous Breakdown (1997) and grabbed the Montreal DMC champ title for three years in a row (98-99-00). In 1999, DJ Blast was the ITF semi-finalist in Montreal and placed third at the national DMC finals in Vancouver, doing the London DMC World with his team, Canadian DMC team champions, Deceptikonz, in 2000. He also did the Vibe Music seminar DJ competition in NY in 1999.

DJ Blast maintained several resident gigs (Living, Exit, Aria, Sona, Circus) and has opened for Craig Mack, IAM, Tricky, Fonky Family and others. Influenced by a slew of artists such as Jimi Hendrix, Mix Master Ice, DJ Jazzy Jeff, Cash Money, the X-Ecutioners and the Invisibl Skratch Piklz. DJ Blast learned early on, as he puts it, that "It takes a certain attitude and charisma" to perform on stage, not just tinkering with gear. He has made a smooth transition from rocking house parties to touring across Canada, showcasing at the FrancoFolies in France and Montreal. In 1995, he released the first of the Tapenutz mixtape series (more than 100), popular mixes/blends of R&B, hip hop and reggae.

DJ Blast's new passion is music production and he has done tracks on Stratege & Cobna’s debut album “Goûte à ma sauce” including their hit single/video "Mont shit " and second video "Et si on est là-dedans". In 2004 he released his own critically-acclaimed producer album "Blas-t-phème" (Militant Muzik/Fusion3) featuring Montreal's finest French and English MCs as well as Toronto's Rochester aka Juice and underground New York artists Poison Pen and P-Dap.

The first single/video of the album with Frenchi Blanco (FP Crew), Kritik and Ray Ray (Les Architekts), Les rues de Montréal, was jointly released on the FP Crew's "Exposé" and "Blas-t-phème" albums. It made the 2004 TOP TEN hip hop videos of both Vibe Plus and Musique Plus and won Video of the Year at the M-U Gala (Montreal Underground). A second Videofact-supported video "Un homme à part" with Montreal rapper Vaï has been released. His recent production can be heard on Cincinnati's Main Flow 's new album "Notebook Assassins", alongside Hi-Tek and other well-known producers.
